Completely made in Australia, it’s built for Australian conditions and customised for individual vehicle makes and models. Our uniquely designed mounting systems provide the strength required to carry heavy loads and withstand the demands of outback touring.

A superior finish and strength are guaranteed through our advanced welding process. Additionally, the racks are zinc-plated to increase corrosion resistance. They’re lighter than most steel racks and stronger than alloy alternatives, making them an excellent choice for tough conditions.

The Oval Steel range offers various styles, including baskets with four sides, open ends with two sides, flat decks with no sides, tents with three sides at the front and no sides at the rear, and canopies. No matter your needs, we have the perfect option for you.

What Goes Into An Oval Steel?

Development and Testing

The Oval Steel rack, developed in the early 2000s, has become an enduring icon of Australian outdoor equipment. Fully customisable, it allows users to design a roof rack to suit their exact needs. Whether you need open ends, closed ends, a tent style, flat deck, or even an upside-down design, the Oval Steel roof rack fits perfectly.

Components

An Oval Steel rack includes:

• Oval tube 31mm x 17.8mm.
• Stainless steel hardware.
• A durable, zinc electroplated and powder-coated frame.
• Crossbars made of 19mm square ERW tubes with a 1.6mm wall thickness.
• Mounting channels that are 40mm x 22mm, compatible with 10mm bolts.
• Wind deflector, when necessary.

Zinc Electroplating

Zinc electroplating protects steel from rust. The process involves immersing the steel in tanks, creating a thin zinc coating about 8 microns thick. This sacrificial coating ensures that even if the outer paint layer is damaged, the zinc will protect the steel beneath. All mild steel components in the Wedgetail rack range undergo zinc electroplating before powder coating.

Mounting Lugs

The mounting lugs attach to fixed points on the vehicle’s roof sub-structure. After installation, mounting rails are bolted to the lugs. These lugs are vehicle-specific, and various fixing devices are used depending on the model. For vehicles with factory-fitted rails, bolt-in points are generally used. If these points are unavailable, we drill through to the sub-structure and use stainless steel rivets to secure the tabs, which are then sealed with commercial-grade silicon.

Mounting Rails

The mounting rails are custom-designed to distribute the load evenly across the vehicle’s roof. Made from 3mm steel, they are zinc-plated and powder-coated with a matt black finish. Utes and wagons use a single-piece rail, while vans often use two pieces per side.
